A traditional German fruit bread enriched with spices, nuts, and dried fruits, often enjoyed during the Christmas season.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 pound unsalted butter
  • 1/2 pound mixed dried fruits
  • 1/4 pound almonds
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup orange zest

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and let stand until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, spices, and salt.
  3. Add eggs and melted butter to the flour mixture.
  4. Pour in the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Knead in the dried fruits and almonds.
  6. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
  7. Shape the dough into a loaf and place on a baking sheet.
  8. Let it rise again until puffy.
  9. Bake at 350°F for about 50 minutes.
  10. Cool and dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Can be stored for several weeks in an airtight container.
  • For added flavor, soak dried fruits in rum overnight.
